The 5th BioBrillouin Meeting (BBM5) Training school will take place immediately prior to the BBM5 Meeting on the 11th and 12th October 2021. The training school is intended as a primer for students, postdocs as well as principal investigators wishing to familiarize themselves with Brillouin Light Scattering for applications in the life sciences and medicine. It consists of a number of lectures by leading-researchers in the field, spanning basic theoretical aspects of what it is possible to measure with BLS, the state-of-the-art in instrumentation and data analysis being used, as well as practical and experimental challenges.

Specifically, talks will cover: (1) Basic theory of BLS (2) Theory and practice of Virtual Imaged Phase Array (VIPA) and Tandem Fabry-Perot (TFP) based spectrometers (3) Analysis of BLS data (4) Extracting components of elasticity tensor (5) Spontaneous & Stimulated BLS (6) Medical Applications of BLS (7) Cell Biology and Developmental Biology applications of BLS, (7) Interpretation of BLS results in different contexts.

Talks will be followed by virtual demo sessions, during which the trainees can ask questions for the demonstrators, and end with a round table discussion and Q&A sessions with the trainers and demonstrators. In order to keep the sessions as interactive as possible, the attendance will be limited. Many of the demonstration videos, following professional copy-editing, will be made available at a later date after the training school.

Application to attend the training school should be made by completing the form below. Selection of participants will be based on an assessment by the BBM5 Scientific Committee on the direct relevance that the topics covered in the training school can be expected to have in benefiting the applicant’s described research/applications. The BBM5 SC will also make sure a sufficiently diverse range of intended applications and scientific diversity is presented, and actively promote the representation from traditionally underrepresented parties.

All questions regarding the BBM5 Training School should be sent to 5thBioBrillouinMeeting [at] gmail.com, with the phrase Training School in the subject line.
