Brillouin Light Scattering Microspectroscopy for Biomedical Research and Applications

Submission Deadline: 1st December 2018

Over the last few years there have been significant advances in the use of Brillouin Light Scattering Spectroscopy/Microscopy for biomedical applications, both in regard to instrument design, as well as evidence that different diseases and pathologies may be identified by changes in their Brillouin spectra. Recently there have been significant advances in the applications of Brillouin microscpectroscopy in regard to biomedical applications, driven by advances in spectrometer designs and the realization that many diseases and conditions are accompanied or precluded by changes in the mechanical properties of cells and tissue. There has been rapidly growing interest in Brillouin microscopy over the last decade as a result of recent advances that now allow for the all-optical label-free 3D mapping of the mechanical properties of live biological samples with diffraction limited resolution. We hope to introduce this technique, its potential, and the latest advances to a broader optics audience.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Applications of Brillouin spectroscopy/microscopy for diagnostics and biomedical research
  • Advances in instrument (Brillouin spectrometer/microscope/endoscope/etc.) design
  • Correlative Brillouin studies (e.g., with AFM, microrheology, Raman, fluorescence, etc.)
  • Interpretation of parameters obtained from Brillouin spectrum

All papers need to present original, previously unpublished work and will be subject to the normal standards and peer review processes of the journal. The standard Biomedical Optics Express Article Processing Charges will apply to all published articles. To be eligible for publication, an expanded conference paper needs to add value to the original conference proceedings. Please see OSA’s guidelines on expanded conference papers for details.

Please prepare manuscripts according to the author instructions for submission to Biomedical Optics Express and submit through OSA’s electronic submission system, specifying from the drop-down menu that the manuscript is for the Feature Issue on Brillouin Light Scattering Microspectroscopy.
